BACKGROUND:

Elk River IS Idaho. Natural and no-frills, individualistic and unpretentious. The trailhead to fun, relaxation, and adventure. There are many trails to choose from, depending on what you like to do and your spirit of adventure.

Hike to free-falling Elk Creek Falls, cascading 300 ft. to the creek and on to Dworshak Reservoir. Take a swim in the swirling pools at the base. Hike, drive or snowmobile to the top of Elk Butte (elevation 5,824 feet) for a spectacular view of two National Forests and the rugged Selkirk-Bitterroot Range.

Dogsled Musher's run the vast white wilderness. Visit a stately cedar grove, home of the largest cedar tree in the Rocky Mountains, more than 3,000 years old and 18 foot in diameter. A maze of back country trails and logging roads is ideal for trail bikes, ATV's and 4 wheel drive vehicles. Drive the trails, see Dent and Granddad Bridges.

Cross-Country bicyclists tour in for a rest, and mountain bike enthusiasts come to test the rugged terrain. Fly in for breakfast and tour the town. Sleuth out a likely spot to fly-fish Elk Creek. Canoe the pond; take a dip or suntan on the docks. Toss a hook and plan on trout for dinner. Search out elusive wild mushrooms or hunt huckleberries.

Wildlife abounds: elk, deer, moose, bear, bobcats, cougars, grouse, hawks, mink, pine marten, muskrat, otter, fisher, and turkeys. Bird watching is a great favorite in the Audubon paradise. Hunters return year after year. Enjoy small-town life in a friendly community of 150.
